Confirmation of the potential usefulness of two human beta globin pseudogene markers to estimate gene flows to and from sub-Saharan Africans
Bianca Maria Ciminelli, Fiorenza Pompei, Michela Relucenti, J. Koji Lum, Jacques Simporé, Gabriella Spedini, Cristina Martínez-Labarga, Miguel G. Pardo
Two polymorphic sites, -107 and -100 with respect to the "cap" site of the human beta globin pseudogene, recently discovered in our laboratory, turned out to have an ethnically complementary distribution. The first site is polymorphic in Europeans, North Africans, Indians (Hindu), and Oriental Asians, and monomorphic in sub-Saharan Africans. C(...)

Haemoglobin C protects against clinical Plasmodium falciparum malaria
Modiano D, Luoni G, Sirima BS, Simporé J, Verra F, Konaté A, Rastrelli E, Olivieri A, Calissano C, Paganotti GM, D'Urbano L, Sanou I, Sawadogo A, Modiano G, Coluzzi M
Abstract Haemoglobin C (HbC; β6Glu→ Lys) is common in malarious areas of West Africa, especially in Burkina Faso 1, 2. Conclusive evidence exists on the protective role against severe malaria of haemoglobin S (HbS; β6Glu→ Val) heterozygosity 3, whereas conflicting results for the HbC trait have been reported 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and no epidemi(...)

Plasma chitotriosidase activity in beta-thalassemia major: a comparative study between Sicilian and Sardinian patients
R. Barone, G. Bertrand, J. Simporè, M. Malaguarnera, S. Musumeci
Background: Chitotriosidase is a functional chitinase secreted by activated macrophages, which is extremely increased in plasma of patients with Gaucher disease (beta-glucocerebrosidase deficiency). Recently, we found that chitotriosidase plasma levels were increased to a variable extent in Sicilian patients with beta-thalassemia major. The ai(...)

HLA class I in three West African ethnic groups: genetic distances from sub-Saharan and Caucasoid populations
D. Modiano, G. Luoni, V. Petrarca, B. Sodiomon Sirima, M. De Luca, J. Simporé, M. Coluzzi, J. G. Bodmer, G. Modiano
Fulani of Burkina Faso (West Africa) are a particularly interesting ethnic group because of their lower susceptibility to Plasmodium falciparum malaria as compared to sympatric populations, Mossi and Rimaibé. Moreover, the occurrence of a Caucasoid component in their genetic make-up has been suggested on the basis of their physical traits and(...)

Plasma homocysteine concentrations in a healthy population living in Burkina Faso
Jacques Simporè, Salvatore Pignatelli, Sergio Barlati, Mariano Malaguarnera, Salvatore Musumeci
Background: The low circulating levels of homocysteine observed in a South African black population have been associated with a low occurrence of coronary heart disease.
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine whether the observation of reduced homocysteine levels in South African black subjects is valid in a black population living(...)

Effectiveness of forced rehydration and early re-feeding in the treatment of acute diarrhoea in a tropical area
S. Pignatelli, J. Simporè, M. Ruggieri, S. Musumeci
Background: The administration of oral re-hydration solution (ORS) via continuous infusion through a nasogastric (NG) tube and early refeeding facilitates delivery in hospitalised children and the return back home.
Design: the observation was made during a one-year stage in the Camillian Medical Centre (CMC) of Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso.(...)
