Multitrait Selection for Average Performance of Rice Varieties Under Drip Irrigation Using MGIDI and FAI-BLUP Techniques

Résumé

Rice is among the most important worldwide staple food grains. However, limited water availability for rice production has resulted in substantial yield reductions. To mitigate this constraint, the adoption of pressurized irrigation systems appears essential for rice production in Burkina Faso. It is therefore crucial to identify genotypes suitable for drip irrigation. It is also important to identify the genotype that integrates the multiple desirable traits for breeding programs. To achieve this goal, a good selection method is required. This study aimed to identify rice genotypes suitable for drip irrigation using the Multitrait genotype-ideotype distance index (MGIDI) and multitrait index–based factor analysis and ideotype design based on best linear unbiased prediction (FAI-BLUP). Twenty rice genotypes were evaluated under drip irrigation during two seasons (2021 and 2022). The data were subjected to combined analysis of variance (ANOVA), MGIDI, and FAI-BLUP analysis using the software R. Correlation analysis was run to identify the relationship between the diferent traits. The combined ANOVA showed a signifcant (p < 0.05) diference between the varieties for the 11 traits assessed. Three genotypes were selected through MGIDI and FAI-BLUP by assuming 15% selection. Three genotypes, namely FKR19, IR841, and FKR76, were jointly selected as ideotype genotypes by both methods, MGIDI andFAI-BLUP. However,therank ofthe three difered according to the method. Those genotypes could be recommended for further evaluation throughout for release in Burkina Faso as outstanding genotype for production under drip irrigation. The strengths of the selected genotype can guide rice breeders to develop new genotypes with multiple desirable traits.
