Résumé

The article describes the experience of the Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Burkina Faso (SOGOB) in developing a methodological approach to organise maternal and neonatal death reviews in selected health facilities in Burkina Faso. The initiative is embedded in the national maternal and perinatal death surveillance and response (MPDSR) framework and aims to standardise case identification, data collection, audit meetings and follow‑up of recommendations in order to improve the quality of obstetric and newborn care.
In each facility, a multidisciplinary committee is responsible for systematically identifying maternal and neonatal deaths, analysing medical causes and contributory factors (including delays, organisation of care, resources and socio‑cultural aspects) and proposing realistic corrective actions with clear responsibilities and timelines. The approach follows the steps of the WHO MPDSR cycle while adapting them to the local context, with emphasis on confidentiality, a no‑blame culture and learning.
The implementation of standard tools and staff training reportedly increased the regularity and quality of review meetings and helped to better document causes of death and guide management decisions, although challenges remain regarding the regular scheduling of meetings, staff participation and follow‑through of recommendations. The authors argue that the SOGOB‑led approach can operationalise national MPDSR policies at maternity level, provided there is strong institutional commitment and integration into existing quality‑of‑care structures.
