Abstract
A link exists between the interpersonal metafunction of language and interactions and communication. The interpersonal metafunction deals with language as an exchange of
commodity and built on statements, questions, offers and commands. Six chapters have been randomly selected across the corpus through probability sampling in Chinua Achebe’s Anthills of the Savannah. Six excerpts had been gathered through purposive sampling. They consist of one excerpt from each of the six chosen chapters and each of the excerpts ranges from two to four sentences. The analysis of the excerpts was carried out taking into account statements and questions as well as offers and commands. Polarity and voice combined to speech functions in the analysis, reveals, beyond the clash of forces, self-confident and assertive characters in Chinua Achebe’s Anthills of the Savannah.
