A prospective study was conducted during July-September 1999 of 299 pregnant women (aged 15-43 years; mean age 25.3 years), attending a medical centre in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, to determine the incidence of mother-child transmission of hepatitis B virus (HBV). The presence of HBV antigens was tested for by enzyme immunoassay. The infants of HBV-positive mothers were also tested for HBV. Results showed that 36 mothers (12.04%) were positive for HBV antigen and 4 of these were carriers of HBV antigen. Among the infants, 9 were carriers of the HBV antigen.
