L'urbanisation rapide présente de nouveaux défis et opportunités pour le développement durable. En Afrique de l'Ouest, il interagit de manière complexe avec la forte croissance démographique, les troubles politiques et les impacts du changement climatique. Au cœur de cette thématique se trouve la compréhension interdisciplinaire du lien entre le changement climatique (ses impacts sur les fonctions écosystémiques et la mobilité humaine) et les petites villes (leur rôle dans l'adaptation et l'atténuation des impacts climatiques). L’analyse repose sur des conceptualisations de la résilience qui incluent le rôle des institutions, la gouvernance et les relations de pouvoir, ainsi que les perceptions et expériences des parties prenantes en matière de qualité de vie. La recherche se concentre spécifiquement sur l'adaptation durable dans les systèmes ruraux-urbains centrés sur les petites villes, définie comme "l'adaptation qui contribue à des voies de développement socialement et écologiquement durables, y compris à la fois la justice sociale et l'intégrité environnementale".
