Toutes les sociétés préindustrielles sont caractérisées par des familles avec une descendance nombreuse, comme le cas présentement dans plusieurs milieux ruraux en Afrique et en Inde. Les différentes théories de la transition de la fécondité évoquent une transformation des comportements tendant à encourager la formation de familles de tailles réduites lorsque la fécondité baisse pour atteindre environ deux enfants par femme. Une de ces transformations est le passage de « l’enfant utile » qui participe à l’économie familiale à « l’enfant précieux » dont la charge économique peut s’avérer importante.
