L’Afrique subsaharienne est caractérisée ces dernières décennies par une urbanisation galopante qui se passe avec peu de planifications. Cette situation favorise le foisonnement des quartiers informels, précaires qui n’ont parfois pas d’infrastructures sociales de base. Les habitants de ces quartiers sont souvent dans des conditions de vie plus difficiles (insalubrité, surpeuplement, manque d’assainissement, possibilités limitées d’emploi, etc.) que des ruraux et arrivent à peine à avoir les trois repas recommandés par jour. De l’autre côté, dans ces milieux urbains, une frange non négligeable des habitants adopte de nouveaux modes de vie de type occidental avec une alimentation riche en sucre, protéine, sel et graisse avec pour conséquence un surpoids et une obésité de plus en plus fréquente.
