Cet article publié dans la revue SIFOE, N°19 de juin 2023 est une version remaniée de notre communication : « L’Archéologie du colonialisme et monuments à la gloire des Troupes noires de la Grande guerre » au deuxième colloque international de l’ Association Paysages et Sites de Mémoires de la Grande Guerre, (N° 2, Paris Invalides, du 24 au 26 mai 2022) avec pour thème : Conflits récents et leur mémoire : des pages de l’histoire universelle et Des Leçons Essentielles pour l’humanité. En effet, la Grande Guerre fait partie d’une histoire partagée entre la France et ses anciennes colonies au regard des sacrifices collégialement consentis en Hommes et en biens pour vaincre l’adversaire. De ce fait, les monuments coloniaux furent érigés en Afrique occidentale française au lendemain de cette guerre pour rendre hommage aux soldats tombés pour la « Mère Patrie ». L’objectif de cet article était de cerner la mémoire coloniale au prisme de ces monuments. C’est ainsi que l’exploitation des archives coloniales et l’observation de ces objets historiques révèlent qu’ils représentent une mémoire commune (entre colonisateur et colonisé) mais coloniale.
