L’objectif des travaux relatifs à cette thématique a été de développer un potentiel d’interactions atomiques pour expliquer le mode de glissement favorisé dans ces métaux hexagonaux à rapport c/a élevé, notamment le zinc et le cadmium. A cette période, les potentiels empiriques, i.e. qui ne traitent que des effets géométriques sur les positions atomiques, ne permettaient pas non seulement de reproduire le rapport c/a de ces métaux et d’expliquer leur mode de glissement favorisé. Un potentiel semi-quantique, i.e. qui prend en compte la structure électronique et qui a permis d’expliquer le mode de glissement favorisé. Ce potentiel a ensuite été appliqué à l’étude des macles dans ces métaux. Les principaux travaux conduits ont porté sur : (a) le développement d’un potentiel semi-empirique de type liaisons fortes qui prend en compte la structure électronique pour Zn et Cd qui reproduit leur rapport c/a; (b) l’application de ce potentiel à l’étude des structures atomiques des macles (101 ̅2) et (112 ̅2) dans Zn et Cd et de leur stabilité relative.
