Résumé

A complex and fascinating area of study per US hegemony in the world together with the multiple facets that it represents, American studies constitutes a major disciplinary concern whether within or outside the United States, with regard to the adequate approach of the subject on a global basis. After over 60 years of existence, it must prove capable of taking up the academic challenges of the time, by endeavoring to get a full grasp of the phenomenon in its diversity, with what it implies in terms of lessons to learn from the past, for a better understanding of the present and charting its future progress.
Thus, this study seeks to contribute to the on-going discussion, with a special reference to the practices of the discipline in Togo and Burkina Faso. In the wake of American studies pioneers, it advocates for interdisciplinarity rather than multidisciplinarity, or worse, island-fortress-like disciplinarity, considering both the complexity of the subject and current academic trend requirements.
